What Can YOU Do?

Bala Lake Railway, in common with nearly all heritage transport operations can only exist with the valuable help given by volunteer workers. The economics of running a 2-foot narrow gauge railway in the heart of Wales mean that permanent posts are at a premium.

All jobs are open to people of either sex, young and old alike (subject to some sensible restrictions) - no matter whether you have railway experience or not you will be made welcome.

Every hour of your leisure time is valuable and we thank you in advance for giving US your time.

Regular Volunteers

Without a regular 'squad' of volunteers to carry out all types of task from eco-maintenance & management through carriage & wagon maintenance to train crews, Bala Lake Railway may not be the happy, friendly visitor attraction it is today.

You could:
  • Learn to fire & drive our steam locomotives
  • Use your skills to help in the carriage & wagon works
  • Meet the public "manning" our signalbox or become a train conductor
  • Keep fit maintaing our track & equipment
  • Manage the lineside trees, grass and fences
  • Help us keep our historic & other building in good condition

Occassional Volunteering

If you able to offer us a few hours or the occassional day, we can still find you valuable tasks to undertake including:
  • Grass cutting and tiding our flowers & gardens
  • Painting fences, benches & noticeboards
  • Maintaining & repairing fences
  • Litter picking and general tidying up
  • Carriage & wagon cleaning
Whatever you feel you can do to help us - you are assured of a warm welcome and the chance to work alongside some really great people!

Contact Roger Hine (Railway Manager) today and tell us how you may help us to keep the trains running!
