| Triassic - Major Overhaul |
10-year Overhaul StartedIn the UK, steam locomtives are required to be stripped down and thier boilers lifted to enable a full examination of all aspects of the boiler and firebox to be made. This is mandatory, stipulated by boiler insurance and the UKs Heath & Safety environment.
In 2003, the railway signed a new agreement with Bryce Latham for Triassic to be used at Bala for 5 years after completion of the steam test after completion of the loco's 10-year overhaul.
The work, on Triassic, commenced in the winter of 2003 when Triassic was stripped down to a kit of parts and by early 2004 the frame had been placed onto a flat wagon awaiting work to start on the horn guides.
Slow ProgressThe overhaul has progressed slowly, between the other more urgent calls on workshop time - the annual winter maintenance of Alice, Holy War, Maid Marian, Bob Davies and the return to service of Chilmark and Merionnydd. Other work such as carriage and wagon repairs and refurbishments have slowed down the work on Triassic.
The insides of the frames were given a coat of undercoat during May 2006, and the outsides prepared for painting.
By June 2006, Triassic's boiler had been given a coat of paint and was awaiting a visit from the boiler inspector to determine what condition itwas in. Meanwhile, the frames were receiving attention, were painted outside and inand the connecting rods refitted.
End in Sight
June 2008 and the boiler has been re-tubed and is almost ready to be re-united with the frames and the loco should be back in service for the 2008 Santa Train weekend (because both Holy War and Alice will be in the works for overhaul this winter).
